Hum Gunahgaar Aurtein – Kishwar Naheed

First published in 1990 in Lahore, Pakistan, and in 1991 in London, the poetry collection HUM GUNAHGAAR AURTAIN (WE SINFUL WOMEN – edited by Rukhsana Ahmad) gives a glimpse of the situation in which women have few rights, and their dance and poetry are considered blasphemous. Protesting the suffocating repression the Sitara-e-Imtiaz recipient Kishwar Naheed courageously wrote with both confrontational anger and ecstatic lyricism.

Hum Gunahgaar Aurtain
Kishwar Naheed

yeh hum gunahgaar aurtain hain
jo ahl-e-jubba ki tamkanat se nah roab khayen
nah jaan bechen
nah sar jhukaain
nah haath jorhen

yeh hum gunahgaar aurtain hain
ke jin ke jismon ki fasal bechen jo log
woh sarfaraz thahren
niyabat-e-imtiyaz thahren
woh davar-e-ahl-e-saaz thahren

yeh hum gunahgaar aurtain hain
ke sach ka parcham utha ke niklein
to jhoot se shahrahein atti milay hain
har aik dehleez pay sazaon ki dastanein rakhi miley hain
jo bol sakti theen woh zubanain kati miley hain

yeh hum gunahgaar aurtain hain
ke ab taqub mein raat bhi aaye
to yeh ankhen nahi bujhein gi
ke ab jo deewar gir chuki hai
usay uthany ki zid nah karna!

yeh hum gunahgaar aurtain hain
jo ahl-e-jubba ki tamkanat se nah roab khayen
nah jaan bechen
nah sar jhukaain nah haath jorhen!
