Rangeela – One of the first feminists from Pakistani film industry

Remembering comedian and director, Rangeela on his 12th death anniversary who was the first Pakistani in our Cinema to publicly express his concerns regarding the treatment of women in Zia-ul-Haq’s regime and support the liberation movement of the 1970s.

He did so via a film called Aurat Raaj (1979) which he directed, produced and even acted in. Released in 1979, the film depicted the story of a housewife who stands up to her chauvinist husband and goes on to form a political party for women across the country, eventually becoming the national leader.

The film is considered to have been well ahead its time and a commendable effort on Rangeela’s part.
